When to Use Aluminum for Tube Bending and Fabrication
Here at Ever-Roll, we produce high volumes of quality wire rings, burner rings, metal tubing, and other fabricants. The majority of these products are made with steel or, when needed, stainless steel.
However, there are times when we utilize aluminum as well.
Aluminum is a light, versatile metal that can be used in a variety situations. Let’s look at some of the advantages of aluminum and when you might use it.
Light Weight
Aluminum is considerably lighter than steel. About three times lighter, to be exact. Now, aluminum doesn’t have the strength of steel, meaning you often need more of it when fabricating. In situations where light weight trumps strength, however, aluminum can prove to be the right choice.
Especially with smaller diameter tubing where thickness and strength mean less.
Cheaper
Aluminum is cheaper than steel. Depending on how you measure it, that is. Pound for pound, the price of aluminum is higher than steel, but since aluminum is lighter, you get a lot more in terms of volume per pound.
Thus, you can get more aluminum for less money.
Choosing aluminum can also save on manufacturing and installation time.
Anti-Corrosive
Whereas steel needs to be modified to resist rust, aluminum is anticorrosive by default. No extra finishing, coatings, or additives are needed. In extreme circumstances, corrosion can happen, but it will never rust.
Stainless steel can generally hold up better against corrosion, but it comes at a higher cost.
What’s Best for Me?
The best material for you depends on your situation. When choosing fabrication materials, you need to consider your budget, your timeline, the quantity needed, the stress that will be placed on the product, the environment it will be used in, and more.
At Ever-Roll, we work with both steel and aluminum across a wide-range of industries and projects. Contact us today, and we can help you determine the best option. Whether you need wire fabrication or mandrel bending, Ever-roll has you covered.
