The Difference Between Regular Steel and Stainless Steel 

When water connects with regular steel, a chemical reaction takes place that breaks down the metal’s composition, turning iron bonds into iron oxide, which is rust. 

This breakdown compromises the strength and structural integrity of the steel. 

Stainless steel prevents this chemical reaction from happening by introducing chromium and nickel. Chromium prevents oxygen from mixing with iron and also provides stainless steel with its shiny appearance. The nickel helps bond the chromium to the steel. 

With stainless steel, your metal objects are ready to go toe-to-toe with water. As an added bonus, it also looks great.  

So Why Not Use Stainless Steel All the Time? 

The main reason is the cost. Due to the additional elements and more complex creation, stainless steel costs more than traditional steel. It can also prove a little trickier to fabricate into different parts and materials.  

If you’re purchasing wire rings or metal tubes at a high volume, the cost difference can add up quickly. 

Depending on the situation, aluminum or carbon steel may be a better alternative. In situations where moisture isn’t present, traditional steel will suffice.
